The conscience (not to be confused with the state of consciousness), is inherent, innate to the spirit. In other words, it is in the spirit from the very first moment of his creation. The word conscience comes from the Latin word "conscientia" (con-cum: to accompany, to go with; scire: knowledge) and it is described as the faculty, power, or inward principle which decides as to the character of one's own actions, purposes, and affections, warning against and condemning that which is wrong, and approving and prompting to that which is right; the moral faculty passing judgment on one's self; the moral sense over all things. Consciousness, in the other hand, is that state when one is aware of things, but not necessarily involving in it the moral consequences of one's actions, intentions or thoughts. The human being has instincts, free will and reason, but, who guides men in the most important aspects of their lives? Instinct? Free will? Or is there something else? Let's see. ____________________________________________________________ "¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤""¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥" ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ - Instinct "Humanity, if it were only the instinct that would guide all your actions in your life, your Father would not have had to reveal His Law to you, nor would He have had to come as Redeemer to save you. However, do not depend on your instinct; superior forces govern your actions and those forces are in the spirit." Our basic material self, which is our body, is endowed with instincts, as it happens with all animals. Those instincts are somewhat useful to us since they take care of the most simple and basic functions of our body, in order to keep it well and alive. But differently from the animals, we humans do not only have a spirit, but we have materially evolved so much in our body and brain that we do not have to be driven by biological imperatives only. We have reason in us, which separates us from our irrational animal brothers, but most important is that we have values, both moral and spiritual, that are by definition the clear manifestation of superior entity in us: The spirit. We understand the spirit as that being which was created to the image and likeness of our Father; it is eternal, immaterial, it is an idea. The soul, on the other hand, being subtle and ethereal as it is, is still material, temporal, it belongs to this Universe's whole matter's count. Animals, plants and humans, even rocks and common matter have soul. Spirit? Only the human being has it. Everything is subjected to evolution: Souls evolve too, and we can clearly see the difference, for example, between a crustacean and a dolphin, or between a worm and a dog or cat. The spirit is subjected to evolution too; but the conscience it is not. ____________________________________________________________ "¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤""¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥" ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ - Free Will Free will is a gift granted to the spirit by the Father; it is because we have this spiritual gift, that we distinguish ourselves from the other spirits since by making our own free choices, we decide which will be the path we follow, which the thoughts we originate, whose deeds we perform. But at the same time that we were endowed with the free will, our wise Father gave us since the beginning, the conscience. "Freedom to act and the light of the conscience to distinguish Good from evil, are two of the greatest gifts with which My love as a Father, endowed your spirit. They are in the spirit of man before he is born and after he dies." "The spirit enjoys the gift of freedom of will; a means through which he must earn merits to save himself." "Who guides, directs or advises the spirit during his free journey in order to distinguish what is righteous from what is unrighteous, and therefore not go astray? The conscience." The conscience does not come and go, it is a unceasing, perpetual light, an ever-present voice that dictates us what is right or what is wrong, regardless of age, culture or whatever our place in the scale of evolution is. Naturally, we have because of the free will, the option to listen to that voice or to follow that light... or not. But, beware! Free will is something that has two elements: One, the faculty of decision; and two, the faculty to do. Only when both elements are present we can truly talk of free will. Suppose that someone, in full use of his free will, decides to go to the top 102th floor of the Empire State Building and throws himself to the vacuum, commiting suicide. So far, his free will, fully operational, will allow him to do that. And he starts his fall. Floor 102, 101, 100... you get the picture. Then, suddenly, at floor 80, our heroe decides to change his mind; he decides NOT to commit suicide. Oooops! Sorry. "No can do"- says his free will to him. -"I can't carry out that order". What happened then with free will? Apparently its power has run out, it simply vanished. Why? Because even having still present the first element, the faculty to decide, the faculty to do was exhausted, was depleted, so to speak. The conscience? Still running high, thank you. ____________________________________________________________ "¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤""¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥"¤"§"¤"¥" ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ - Conscience: The Light of God "The conscience is the light of God, and that light is fire of love which consumes all impurity. Behold the fire in which the spirit blends anew, to arise again full of light." "The conscience guides him, and it does not separate from him during desperation, or in the loss of reasoning, or during agony, because it is intimately bound to the spirit." "The conscience is the Divine spark; it is a superior light, and is a strength to aid man not to sin." Ah! The wonderful power of the conscience. With it we can free ourselves of sin, we can really take our will to heights that otherwise are unreachable to us. "Who do you think has given the spirit the illumination of a perfect judge to pronounce judgement on himself? The conscience, that at the moment of justice will seem to you that it shines with a clarity never seen before." "And it will be the conscience the one to say to each one of you what was the good, the just, reality and the truth which took place on the Earth, and what was bad, the false hood and impureness sown along your path." One of the most outstanding properties of the conscience is, that thanks to its inherent perfection, we can know the absolute truth in the spirit, as well as the reality on Earth. Absolute truth? "There is not such thing as the absolute truth!" - someone might utter aloud. After all, this is a very common concept that wise guys always throw to the table in any discussion about truth and reality (which many times are not the same). Well, let me tell you: If someone says that there is not such a thing as the absolute truth, I might then ask her or him back: "Really? Not even this one you are saying?" Catch 22, my brothers and sisters. For if that statement cannot be, by definition, absolute, then the opposite is possible. Humm! Jokes aside, please meditate on the marvelous advantage that has been given to us, in order to make us see or understand the truth about everything, by simply following the dictates of our conscience. And in this world, plenty of deceiving traps and oscure ambushes, this is definitively a plus! Many confound what is more suitable to us with justice, thus fooling ourselves badly. Having this in mind, probably next time we try to analyse our deeds of the day by the light of the conscience, we get to advance in our own spiritual improvement, by making us aware of our mistakes and wrongdoings.
